Why Halloween Used That Cool Opening Scene

Why Halloween Used That Cool Opening Scene

The new Halloween is a culmination of the conflict between Michael Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode after the cult-classic hit theaters 40 years ago. While the film's chilling opening fits seamlessly into the movie by amping up the suspense right away, it wasn't the original opening scene the filmmakers had in mind. Director David Gordon Green explained his original vision and why it didn't end up making it into Halloween:

Up until production, the opening was going to be a prologue that gave us some context of our narrative. It was going to back up in time; 1978. As we were approaching production and we had 25 days of principal photography schedule in front of us, it wasn't going to make sense. We had to do all this period recreation and specific stuff that became too daunting considering our short shooting schedule. So we had to come up with something really quickly.

Although the Halloween filmmakers were stinted by the tight production schedule set by Blumhouse Productions at first, if you've seen the film it doesn't look it. The opening scene has British podcasters visiting Smith's Grove Sanitarium to see deadly serial killer Michael Myers, who has been locked up there since his last run-in with Laurie Strode all those decades ago. Since the silent murderer doesn't say much of anything and they are gunning for an interview with him, they pull out the iconic mask for him to see as Myers sits in chains. The audience isn't clued into what happens next, but the terrifying reactions by the other patients surrounding him opens the film with quite a few chills.

Director David Gordon Green said they scrapped the original, more complex idea and decided upon the new opening for Halloween just six days before shooting began in January. While it would have made sense for the direct sequel to include a recap of the forty year gap between the two films, the opening they went with is much more in line with the circumstances behind the filming of the original Halloween.

John Carpenter's original horror movie was filmed in just 21 days, and the director enlisted his college friend, Nick Castle to become the man behind the mask. It was filmed in the springtime in Pasadena, California with set designers painting leaves orange to make it look like it was October. The new Halloween comes after several sequels, but ignores the timelines and events set up therein to assure that the property remains an iconic one that moviegoers are excited to revisit. And, the revised opening certainly seems to help with that. In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Green continued to explain, saying:

I've been making indie movies for 20 years so it's not unusual, but it's funny making a movie now that has this big studio profile and support and campaign, but if you put us back in time in January where we are like, how is it even possible to film this in that number of days? I was confused and upset that I didn't think we could accurately achieve this prologue. We did have this really cool location we found that had this weird checkerboard courtyard and we were going to meet Michael. We just came up with a heightened environmental atmospheric opening that was going to be inexpensive.

Filmmakers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride came onto Halloween as super fans of the franchise, eager to continue what John Carpenter started and expand on it with their own signature. The setback of not having enough time, or money, initially, to make the opening scene they set out to was likely a frustrating process, but by embracing the low-budget circumstances of the original, they seem to have come out of it on top.

Halloween is currently in its debut weekend at the box office, with an expected record of $70 million by the end of it. The direct follow-up to John Carpenter's classic has been thrilling fans of the original, horror fans and critics alike, so head to the theater and see if the opening scene successfully sets up the action to come for yourself.

Zoe Saldana Reveals How She Honestly Doesn't Know Gamora's Destiny In Avengers: Endgame

Zoe Saldana Reveals How She Honestly Doesn't Know Gamora's Destiny In Avengers: Endgame

We lost a lot of fan favorite characters at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but one of the most emotional losses came long before "the snap" when Thanos sacrificed his "daughter" Gamora in order to obtain one of the Infinity Stones. Of course, the Infinity Stones themselves mean that death is not necessarily permanent, but don't try asking Zoe Saldana what the future holds for Gamora, because even the actress herself says she doesn't really know. Because of the way the actors are never given the whole story on set, Saldana admits she has no idea what, if anything, is next for Gamora...

These last two years weve been in such a daze shooting these two films for Avengers. Nobody gets the right script because they gave it to misdirect you. We are, like, just gossiping in the trailer, kind of, like ... Whats the other actor coming from? What do you mean, what did you shoot when you shot with so-and-so? Oh, crap, whats going on? I honestly do not know Gamoras destiny in the Marvel universe.

Zoe Saldana's comments to the New York Daily News are well structured as to not specifically give anything away. Still, you could certainly take her comments to mean that Gamora at least has some scenes in Avengers: Endgame. Of course, she could also be trying to intentionally misdirect by implying that when it's not the case.

Zoe Saldana makes it sound like she doesn't know if her character is brought back to life by the end of Avengers: Endgame or not, which seems unlikely, as one would certainly assume that if she did come back to life, she filmed a scene in which that happens. Still, considering how little some the Marvel actors are told, even about the scenes they are actually filming, it's possible the actress was in a scene and didn't really know what it was that was being filmed.

Of course, the fate of Gamora is a bit more important to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that we know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is actually happening. It's difficult to imagine a third Guardians film that doesn't include Gamora, but such a thing is certainly possible.

Of course, if we wanted to take Zoe Saldana's statement at face value, the idea that she doesn't know Gamora's destiny could simply mean she doesn't know where the road ends. Maybe Gamora does return to life, and Saldana even knows that, but if she doesn't know what Guardians 3 has in store for the character, then the character's true destiny is still up in the air.

This is a lot of hair splitting to be sure, but that's what you've got to expect as we sit here mere weeks away from finally seeing Avengers: Endgame. We'll have a lot of answers very soon, but until we get them, anything is possible.

Yes, Captain Marvel's Producers Have Talked About Secret Invasion

Yes, Captain Marvel's Producers Have Talked About Secret Invasion

While the Skrulls have been a significant part of Marvel Comics history since the early 1960s, one of their most notable arcs in the canon played out within the last 15 years. An event orchestrated by Brian Michael Bendis, Secret Invasion saw alarm bells ring all around the Marvel Universe as fans found themselves questioning whether it was possible that their favorite heroes had been replaced by shapeshifting imposters.

Now with the Skrulls making their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel, there has been incessant speculation about the possibility of a Secret Invasion adaptation -- and while nothing is on the books right now, Marvel Studios producer Jonathan Schwartz has confirmed that behind-the-scenes conversations have been happening:

Yes we talked about Secret Invasion. I wouldn't go into this movie saying 'Which one of these superheroes is a Skrull?' because Carol's is more or less the first superhero to show up on Earth. But are we planting seeds for future movies? Always.

So get ready for paranoia, folks! Once the Skrulls enter the picture, basically every character transforms into a suspicious figure with questionable motives.

Jonathan Schwartz made these comments last year during a press day on the set of Captain Marvel -- fielding questions from reporters at the start of the day to offer baseline information about the upcoming blockbuster. During a discussion about the Skrulls, the producer was specifically asked about the potential of seeing Secret Invasion on the big screen someday, and while he most certainly didn't confirm that it's going to happen, he also definitely didn't take it off the table as a possibility.

Beginning in earnest during the spring of 2008, Secret Invasion basically jumpstarted when the Skrull homeworld was destroyed during the 2007 Marvel Cosmic event Annihilation. The shapeshifting aliens made a plan to colonize Earth as a replacement, and their method for takeover was replacing key individuals with Skrulls in disguise. Much like every other Marvel Comics arc that has made its way to the big screen, any adaptation wouldn't have to follow the source material beat-for-beat, but there is definitely a core concept in there that could make for excellent cinema.

What only makes this idea more enticing is the way in which the Skrulls are being introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it would have been just fine to see the aliens clash with Earth for the first time in a modern setting, Captain Marvel is making it so that the Skrulls are aware of our planet all the way back in the 1990s. This means that if a big screen Secret Invasion is hatched, there will exist the potential to tie things back into the canon as far as 30 years into the past -- which is pretty awesome for continuity nerds.

It's noteworthy that this is also exactly the right time for discussions about Secret Invasion to go down. Marvel Studios has spent the last 10 years orchestrating things to lead towards Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and it's not clear what they have planned for the future when it comes to crossover stories. An insane battle against the Skrulls might be the perfect choice.

It's entirely possible that the end of Captain Marvel will tease some kind of persistent Skrull presence on Earth that will inspire all kinds of paranoia -- but we won't know if that's true until we actually see the film. Thankfully, the wait for it is almost over, as the blockbuster is just a few months away, set to arrive on March 8th. Be on the lookout for a whole lot more of our coverage during that stretch, including more from our time on the set!

Well, when you're introducing the Skrulls into your universe, I would think so. But yes, an executive producer on the upcoming Captain Marvel film has mentioned in a recent interview that the Secret Invasion arc from Marvel Comics was a topic of conversation in regards to this film.

Disney And Fox Just Approved The Big Merger

Disney And Fox Just Approved The Big Merger

Today is a day that is probably going to go down in the history of entertainment. Both Disney and Fox shareholders met to discuss the proposed merger, and the deal has now been approved by both sides. While it will still be some time before the two companies have truly merged together, that process can now get underway.

Both meetings took place concurrently at the New York Hilton so stockholders of both companies were voting at more or less the same moment to decide the fates of both companies. Both meetings were remarkably short considering what was at stake, lasting only a few minutes each. You'd think people weren't voting on one of the largest entertainment mergers in history.

The Walt Disney Company actually livestreamed the shareholders meeting so anybody could follow the proceedings. They were about as dry as you would expect a shareholders meeting to be, but the results were anything but dull. In a room where nearly 70% of Disney shareholders were present, representing over a billion share of stock, 99% of them voted in favor of the proposal, which was the issuance of stock as compensation for the merger between the Walt Disney Company and 21st Century Fox.

The stockholder approval was one of the last major hurdles the deal needed to overcome since government regulators had already given approval to the merger. There's always the possibility that lawsuits could still be filed that could slow things down, but one way or another, this merger is moving forward.

The deal gives Disney control over the Fox TV and movie studios, as well as cable channels Nat Geo and FX, Fox's 30% holding in Hulu --which gives Disney a 60% majority share-- as well as a 39% share of European satellite company Sky. The deal was going to include Fox's collection of regional sports channels, but government regulators required Disney to divest themselves of those, so the company, who owns ESPN, would not have such a dominant position in the cable sports world.

Disney is spending $71.3 billion on the deal, a price they increased to fend off a competing bid by Comcast.

Nothing is changing overnight, but clearly, a lot will be changing in the months and years to come, and at every level of the industry. The biggest part of the deal for movie fans has been the fact that the deal returns the film rights to many Marvel characters back to the company, which paves the way for the integration of the X-Men universe into the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also could mean we may see many more Fox properties integrated into Disney's theme parks.

However, it also means there is less competition in the industry as a whole and Disney is now an even larger force in entertainment than they were previously. What exactly will they do with that power?
