Black Panther Also Beat A Lucasfilm Record This Weekend

This weekend's box office has been the talk of the town all day, namely because Marvel's latest flick Avengers: Infinity War broke a box office record, having the biggest opening weekend of all time and beating out Star Wars: The Force Awakens for highest opening weekend ever. However, it wasn't the only Marvel movie to hit a milestone this weekend. Marvel's last flick, Black Panther is also still in theaters, and this weekend it brushed ahead of a different Lucasfilm flick in terms of box office records. Over the weekend, Black Panther bumped ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi at the worldwide box office.

Counting all markets, Black Panther has now pulled in $1,333,668,777. It was impressive when that movie made over a billion worldwide, but the latest numbers mean it has bumped ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi at the box office. This also means that Black Panther has cracked the Top 10 in terms of box office totals so far. Star Wars: The Last Jedi ranks in at 11, according to Box Office Mojo. Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens still rank in the Top Three for all-time totals... but Thanos is here.

After a few weeks of dropping at the box office, we previously reported that Black Panther also had a big weekend at the box office domestically. Not quite the $258 million weekend that Avengers: Infinity War had, but a good weekend nonetheless. The movie ended up in fifth place this weekend, making $4.3 million at the box office. Not too bad for a movie that has been out since February 16.

There have been quite a few movies that have shown this sort of longevity over the past few months. Both Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Greatest Showman showed longevity at the box office in the early months of 2018, and more recently the horror flick A Quiet Place has done well for multiple weekends, and was still in second place this weekend, following Avengers: Infinity War.

Black Panther was always expected to do well at the box office, but the last couple of months have seen the movie far and away exceed initial estimates. There's still time for the numbers to bump up for both Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War in theaters, as well. The latter is only heading into its second weekend this weekend, and Black Panther may be seeing renewed interest thanks to people catching that flick before seeing the new multi-cast Avengers-related film. To help both Marvel flicks break more box office records, you can catch Black Panther and Infinity War in theaters now, or check out what we know about the latest film with our full guide.
