Zack Snyder Has Clarified What His Robin Plans Were For Batman V Superman

In the two years since its release, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still generating a lot of conversation among fans, and Zack Snyder has helped with that in recent months. The director has been taking to his Vero account to talk with fans about his time in the DC Extended Universe, including calling into question the identity of the dead Robin. Jason Todd is the one who is killed by The Joker in the comics, but recently Snyder revealed that as he saw it, Dick Grayson was the one who died. Snyder let his followers know about this by simply writing:

This revelation came after a fan posted about a Suicide Squad deleted scene where Batman, having just captured Harley Quinn, says, "Joker took something important from me, now I'm gonna take something from him." The fan wondered if Batman was referring to Jason Todd, but Zack Snyder later responded that (at least in his mind), it's Richard Grayson, a.k.a. the first Robin, who was taken away from Bruce Wayne, not Jason Todd, the second Robin. It's worth noting this isn't the first time this twist has been brought up, as during Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's shoot, a gravestone was spotted that read 'Richard John Grayson." However, it remained uncertain whether this was a legit story element or was just a prop thrown onto the set as a joke. Of course, given that a Nightwing movie is in development, that means that if that project goes forward, Dick needs to stay alive. So I suspect that as far as the Warner Bros and DC brass are concerned, Dick is still out fighting crime and Jason is the one buried six feet under.

But Zack Snyder wasn't done with the Robin talk on Vero. Later on, when another fan asked if there was a plan to bring Dick back to life or would he just have stayed dead, the director responded:

Longtime DC Comics fans know that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was heavily influenced by The Dark Knight Returns, particularly by showing the eponymous heroes coming to blows. While the rumors claiming that Jena Malone was playing Carrie Kelley, the new Robin introduced in The Dark Knight Returns, proved to be false (Malone actually played Jenet Klyburn in the Ultimate Edition), now we know that Zack Snyder did plan on pairing Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne at some point in the future. No doubt this was part of Snyder's original five movie plan, but given the new direction the DCEU is now going in, as well as Snyder not expected to helm another DC film, who knows if we'll ever see Carrie in a live action theatrical setting.

The Story Behind How Star Trek Created Klingon And Vulcan Is Great

Star Trek went the extra mile in creating some of its alien languages like Klingon and Vulcan, giving them real form and grammar rather than simply creating gibberish. However, while the final product of these languages feels methodically crafted, it turns out the beginning of the process was far less planned and much more hilarious. Marc Okrand, the linguist who created both Klingon and Vulcan says he was first offered the job to create the Vulcan language in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, and he actually was asked to create gibberish. Specifically, gibberish that would match the lip movements of the same words, that had already been spoken on the set in English. According to Okrand...

My real job, the one that really paid the bills, was closed captioning. The first program we did live was the Oscars, 1982. They flew me out to L.A., and I was having lunch with a friend who worked at Paramount. She and I go out to lunch, and the fact that I was a linguist came up --- I have a PhD in linguistics. She said: 'That's really interesting. We've been talking to linguists. There's this scene in the movie where Mr. Spock and this female Vulcan character have a conversation. When they filmed it, the actors were speaking English. But in post- production, everyone thinks it would be better if they were speaking Vulcan.' They wanted a linguist to come and make up gobbledygook that matches the lip movements. And I said, 'I can do that!'

It's actually pretty funny that the beginning of the process that led to the creation of alien languages so well designed that you can actually study and learn them yourself began within the constraints of only being able to create sounds that matched preexisting lip movements.

Apparently, Paramount liked Marc Okrand's work inventing these few words of Vulcan so much in Star Trek II that he tells the Washington Post that when the time came that they needed somebody to create words of Klingon for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, they again called on the linguist. Klingon had actually already been spoken briefly, in the opening of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In order to keep continuity with the first film, Okrand listened to the language used in that film and simply built on that, making sure the language sounded alien by combining sounds from different languages that didn't sound like they belonged together.

You listen to the lines in the first movie. That'll tell you what the sounds are. I added to it. These are not human; their language should not be recognizably human. But the people who are going to speak it, the actors, are human. So I added no sounds that you can't find in some human language or other, but you shouldn't find these sounds in the same language. It's unnatural. At the time I didn't know it was going to, you know, live long and prosper.

Live long and prosper, it did, however. Decades later the Star Trek franchise is still going strong and the languages created by Marc Okrand are still being used. We'll almost certainly hear them in the next Star Trek movie, whichever one that turns out to be.

Jet Li Reassures Fans After They Expressed Concern Over His Aged Appearance

A few days ago, a photo surfaced online of actor Jet Li looking frail, sickly and well beyond his years. People were shocked and dismayed to see the Fearless actor, known for his boyish looks and sprightly moves onscreen, in such a state, and there was a subsequent outpouring of concern for the health of the martial arts movie legend. The worry and concern of his fans for his well-being eventually found its way back to Jet Li himself, and the actor has reached out to put everyone at ease, letting them know that he is feeling great. Check out his response to the recent fan concerns, below:

It is certainly reassuring for Jet Li to have reached out like this to let everyone know that he isn't in the dire state that fans feared. You can also see in the photos he posted on his Facebook that he is walking upright on his own and doesn't look nearly as old or frail as he did in that original picture. It is great to hear that he is feeling good and seems to be in good spirits. Also letting his fans know that he has projects that he is working on is encouraging, indicating that if he is healthy enough to work, things aren't as bad as they seemed.

You can check out the original post that caused such shock and worry below to see how different Jet Li appears in it and why people were worried about the actor, who is only 55.

You can understand why this photo caused such consternation, but it is also easy to see how it could be misleading towards the actor's health. The lighting here is deeply unflattering and as such it makes Jet Li look much older than he is, as it would for most people captured in such light. His posture also makes him look like he is being held up, but from Jet Li's post you can see that probably isn't the case. Simply put, this was just a bad photo, it happens.

Part of the concern was undoubtedly due to Jet Li appearing in a photo looking so much different than the Jet Li we are used to seeing in movies. We are used to seeing a Jet Li with boyish features and a head of hair. Yet, he is now a 55-year-old man and like many he has gone grey and lost his hair. He is also suffering from hyperthyroidism, which can cause weight loss and fatigue, among a number of other symptoms. Plus I imagine doing wushu at such a high-level from such a young age is probably pretty rough on your joints in the long run.

I'm sure it probably doesn't feel great for people to worry that you are old and sickly, but hopefully the knowledge that he is so beloved and so many people care about him, that concern for his health caused such an uproar is touching. Fortunately, Jet Li is doing well and we can look forward to seeing him back onscreen in the future -- perhaps in that next Expendables film?

If not in the action franchise, one of Jet Li's upcoming projects is the upcoming Disney live-action remake of Mulan, where he is signed on to play the emperor of China. Mulan hits theaters on March 27, 2020. For movies hitting theaters a little bit sooner, check out our 2018 release schedule.
