6 Things You Need For A Successful Jurassic World Movie, According To Colin Trevorrow
The Jurassic Park film series could have remained a trilogy following 2001's Jurassic Park III, but in 2015, the franchise rampaged back on to the big screen with Jurassic World, and later this month, the sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, arrives. Although he passed off directing duties to A Monster Calls' J.A. Bayona, Colin Trevorrow remained an integral figure on Fallen Kingdom, having co-written and executive produced the movie. So needless to say he has plenty of experience working with this world of dinosaurs, and he's narrowed down the process to making a successful Jurassic World movie to six key steps, which are as follows:
Treat dinosaurs like regular animalsHave a relatable heroDon't forget the villain(s)Create non-stop perilBe responsible while you entertainInvolve Steven Spielberg
Looking at all the Jurassic Park and World movies that have come out so far, this is a solid list of rules. As far as the dinosaurs go, while most of them are incredibly dangerous, they can't come across as malevolent monsters. And while it is fun to watch these prehistoric creatures run around, these movies ultimately aren't that interesting without compelling human characters, whether they're good or bad. Colin Trevorrow is also wise for still consulting with Steven Spielberg, because although author Michael Crichton (who passed away in 2008) created this mythology, Spielberg is the one who brought it to life in a theatrical setting. But arguably the most vague tidbit is "be responsible while you entertain," which Trevorrow explained thusly to BFI:
I try not to make a message movie, but I think that inherent in the story we're telling are some real questions about our responsibility to other living creatures on the planet. And we've put a lot of them in situations of peril. The last male white rhino just died. That's human responsibility. And we've had a great effect on this planet, and we do have to have a discussion about what we can do to correct those mistakes.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will certainly be tackling the 'human responsibility' element. Taking place four years after Jurassic World, the sequel will see Bryce Dallas Howard's Claire Dearing and Chris Pratt's Owen Grady reuniting to rescue as many dinosaurs off Isla Nublar before the island's erupting volcano destroys everything in its path. However, the "fun" won't stop there, because following this rescue operation, Claire, Owen and their allies will discover that the surviving dinosaurs, including the fictional Indoraptor, are being sold as weapons. As ferocious as these beasts are, it'll be up to our intrepid heroes to stop this conspiracy from being fully implemented.
