Incredibles 2 Just Passed An Incredible Box Office Milestone
We knew fans were excited about a new Incredibles movie after such a long wait, but we had no idea people were quite this excited. After a month and a half of release, Incredibles 2 has become the third movie for Disney this year, and the 36th movie of all-time, to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
Slightly more than half, or $574 million, of that total was made domestically, while the rest, according to Box Office Mojo, came from overseas markets. It's a huge increase over the original film, which, even adjusted for inflation, didn't quite break the $400 million mark at the domestic box office, and has an official worldwide total of $633 million.
This put Incredibles 2 in some pretty fine superhero company, as it now sits alongside Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War in the 2018 billion dollar club. Only one other movie has reached that level this year, Jurassic World: _Fallen Kingdom_, which is third place worldwide for the year at $1.2 billion.
This is just another example of how Disney has been completely dominating the box office. The most impressive thing is that the studio is responsible for over a third of the 2018 box office, but has done so releasing only six films this year. In addition to three billion dollar powerhouses, Disney has only released A Wrinkle in Time, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Ant-Man and the Wasp, though some of Disney's 2018 business comes from holdover 2017 releases like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Thor: Ragnarok and Coco.
It will be interesting to see if Pixar can match this feat again next year. Next summer will see the release of Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 3 is another member of the billion dollar club, so it's certainly possible. Toy Story is still Pixar's marquee franchise, though a lot of fans are far from sure where a fourth film will actually go considering the third movie seemed to end the story on a pretty definitive note.
Both Incredibles 2 and Ant-Man and the Wasp are still in the domestic top ten, which means neither one is quite done adding to Disney's total for the year. Incredibles 2 will very likely overtake The Dark Knight for the number 35 overall spot and could even try to jump a few more places before everything is said and done. The two films will do battle with yet another Disney film this weekend when Christopher Robin, the live-action Winnie the Pooh film, debuts. While it likely won't do a billion dollars in business, it has a strong potential to win the weekend and add to Disney's mammoth box office year. Disney could very likely see three films in the top ten next weekend.
